Every year, thousands of people enter Canada as temporary foreign workers. Only a small percentage of these workers will be able to stay in Canada and become Permanent Residents or citizens. Women with temporary immigration status face unique challenges in Canada – including exploitation, sexual abuse, and long separation from family members.
For this social issues discussion, we will explore the migration experiences of women who enter Canada as temporary workers, specifically those who come to work as caregivers for children. This discussion will focus on the lived experience of these migrants and their experiences living and working in Canada. Facilitators include Nellie Alcaraz from Migrante Alberta, and Hamilet, a woman with lived experience in the caregiver program.
This workshop is for women-identifying individuals 18 and up. There is free child minding available for children ages 19 months-12 years.
