Get Involved – Join a Permaculture Calgary Guild Circle

Whether you have a few hours a week or a few hours a month, there is a meaningful place for you in our community. The Permaculture Calgary Guild is growing, and we are looking for passionate, curious people to help us do more of what we love: connecting people with nature, building regenerative skills, and transforming Calgary one yard at a time.

How We Work: Circles and Sociocracy

The PCG is governed using a model called sociocracy, a collaborative, consent-based framework where leadership is distributed across small, purpose-driven teams called circles. Rather than one or two people carrying everything, each circle holds a specific area of the organization’s work, makes decisions together, and reports back to the broader board.

Sociocracy operates on a principle we love: “good enough for now, safe enough to try.” Decisions do not need to be perfect to move forward, they just need to be something everyone can work with. It is a model built for real people doing real work together.

Our Board of Directors provides overall governance and strategic direction. Circle Leads sit on the board, attend monthly meetings, and bring updates and decisions from their circle to the larger group. Circle members are the heart of our operational work and are not required to attend board meetings, making circle member roles a wonderful entry point if you want to contribute without a full board commitment.

BOARD ROLES

(approx. 10 to 12 hours per month)

Board members attend monthly board meetings, participate in at least one circle, and share collective responsibility for the health and direction of the organization. Circle Leads are board members who anchor the day-to-day work of their circle and serve as the connection point between circle work and board governance.

Secretary

Behind every well-run organization is someone who makes sure nothing falls through the cracks. Our Secretary is that person.

You will keep our official records accurate and accessible, manage meeting logistics, take and distribute minutes, and make sure our communications reach the right people at the right time. This role sits on our Executive Circle and is ideal for someone who values structure, clarity, and follow-through.

You might be a great fit if you are organized and detail-oriented, comfortable with digital tools, and energized by keeping things running smoothly behind the scenes.

Events Circle Lead

Do you love bringing people together? Our Events Circle Lead takes the helm on PCG’s community gatherings, workshops, and seasonal celebrations, including our beloved Permablitz events and film nights.

You will develop and manage our annual events calendar and budget, oversee logistics from venue booking to volunteer coordination, and bring your circle’s work and updates to the board each month.

You might be a great fit if you have experience in event planning or project coordination, enjoy community building, and are energized by seeing an idea go from concept to celebration.

Marketing and Communications Circle Lead

Help us shape how the PCG shows up in the world. Our Marketing and Communications Circle Lead develops our communications strategy and media plan, oversees our social media and newsletter presence, and ensures our voice is warm, consistent, and rooted in our values.

You will represent the Marketing and Communications Circle at monthly board meetings and work closely with other circle leads to amplify everything the organization does.

You might be a great fit if you are a strategic communicator, have experience in marketing or community engagement, and believe that good storytelling is how movements grow.

CIRCLE MEMBER ROLES

(approx. 4 to 8 hours per month)

Circle members focus on the hands-on work of their circle alongside their Circle Lead. You are not required to attend monthly board meetings, just show up for your circle, bring your skills, and help us make things happen.

Events Circle Member

Our Events Circle brings PCG’s community gatherings, workshops, and seasonal celebrations to life, and we need enthusiastic members to help make it all happen.

You will support event logistics, help coordinate volunteers, assist with venue sourcing, and pitch in on the many moving pieces that make a great event feel effortless.

You might be a great fit if you enjoy hands-on project support, love community events, and get a little buzz from seeing a room full of happy people.

Permablitz Circle Member (Circle Lead in place)

A Permablitz is one of the most joyful things we do, a volunteer work party that transforms a community member’s yard using permaculture design principles. Our Permablitz Circle makes those days possible, and we are looking for enthusiastic members to join an already wonderful team.

You will help coordinate logistics, recruit and support volunteers, liaise with host sites, and ensure every blitz is safe, educational, and fun.

You might be a great fit if you love hands-on work, have some permaculture knowledge or curiosity, and enjoy working as part of a team outdoors.

Marketing and Communications Circle Member

Help us tell the story of what we do. Our Marketing and Communications Circle shapes how the PCG shows up on social media, in our newsletter, and across the Calgary community, and we are looking for creative, communicative people to join the team.

You might contribute content creation, copywriting, graphic design, photography, social media, or whatever communications skills you bring to the table.

You might be a great fit if you are a storyteller, a visual thinker, or someone who believes that good communication is how communities grow.
